Using keywords effectively with your posts
Meta tags are one of the most important factors affecting the ranking of your site. This is why many bloggers choose to display different keywords for different posts. For example, I am using the AutoMeta plugin by boakes.org. I manually enter what keywords have to be used on each posts in meta keywords tag. However it is important to optimize or at least make some research on what keywords you should put in.

There are couple of steps that I follow while adding keywords to a post:
- First of all, I search for high-volume high-traffic keywords in Google Suggest.
- You need to check that every word in your long-tail keyword you just found is present in your article. You might want to change your article for this.
- Never try to rank high for single keywords as this would be near-impossible for a single post unless it has hundreds of backlinks. You can see some research data at oneStat.com and rankStat.com.
- Using the AutoMeta plugin, you can seperate words in a long tail keyword by using “-” between each word. So I want to use “Using keywords effectively” in my meta keywords tag, I would write “using-keywords-effectively” in the autometa field.
Here are the average number of words searched by people according to the above researches:
- one word 14.4%
- two words 30.1%
- three words 27.1%
- four words 15.6%
- five words 7.3%
- Over five words 5.5%
This means that 57% of the searches are done in either two words or three words. I personally do not recommend phrases of over 4 or 5 words because the search volume for any one phrase is so low.
